The Boat

I have walked along these tidal flats a hundred times the past few years

I can't remember when I first saw The Boat just sitting there in the tidal flotsam, nestled up against the eel grass

Maybe it's because boats are everywhere on Cape Cod
Maybe it's because this boat is much like the people we pass everyday on our hi-ways and by-ways
We hurriedly brush pass all those people - and boats -
scarcely noticing the same tired looking hulks we nearly bump into each day

And then - Bingo - one day we do notice!

Clearly, lighting and tide are always a bit different
Casting The Boat in differing perspectives
Much like the circumstances affecting those people we almost bump into - but don't see

Has The Boat been buffeted by relentless rise and fall of the tide?
For how many years have spring rains and winter storms battered The Boat?

How could I know? How could I tell?
For I hadn't bothered to notice

Abandoned? Cast off? Neglected?
Without a doubt

More debris than a season's neglect
has encrusted The Boat's redoubt
This once proud craft
has descended as low as a boat can go

Now I check The Boat each time I pass
Like that "old friend" in the looking glass

Another Look - Another Thought

Although paint is chipped
and innards gray
One can't help think of a better day

The Day some proud master applied that shiny black coat
with innards gleaming white

The Day excited children or grandchildren crowded into The Boat
Enjoying a ride down Buck's Creek to Nantucket Sound

The Day a tired master Anchored his Boat on this tidal shore
Planning to set forth another Day

But, alas, Never More

The Boat
Memories are Anchored Here ......
...... Forever More

But ......
Every time I pass, I can't help wondering about The Boat
Whence did it come?
Where had it been?
Why is it here?

And The Boat Master ......
Did he shed a tear on this Last Anchorage?
Did he know?
or
Did life play a cruel hoax?
Death?
Divorce?
Accident?

maybe .....
the dreaded Alzheimer
robbed him of all Memories of .....
The Boat
