Cranberries are the main agriculture crop on Cape Cod Shown, at left, is Chatham cranberry grower Ray Murphy and son Brian operating mechanical pickers on a local bog as they harvest the year's bounty. Termed "dry picking", this method provides fruit that can be stored for longer periods before processing "Wet picking", involves flooding the bog, mechanically separating berries from the vines; berries then float to the surface and are gathered and brought to market. Wet picked berries usually need to be processed fairly soon after harvesting |

At Right is close up view of Ray & Brian operating the mechanical pickers Revolving toothed rake at front of machine separates berries from the vine, depositing fruit in the conveyor visible directly above the rake Berries are dropped from the conveyor into a basket. When full, the basket is set aside for later pickup. Note supply of extra baskets carried on pickers. Power is supplied by gasoline engine located at operator's left |
