With a 10" draft, this Monomoy Ferry with 100 hp motor, is well suited to creep within inches of the shoreline

Birds Galore

Laughing gulls, big Black Back gulls and Herring gulls dominate the foreground

Terns occupy nesting ground off the beach, fiercely "dive bomb" predators. Black Back gulls, coyotes, raccoons
and the occasional hawk attack eggs and chicks
Whimbrel, oyster catchers, curlew are a few shore birds to be seen on North Monomoy Island

Maintaining a safe 30 - 40 foot distance, seals surface to keep an eye on us. Some of the big bulls weigh in at 1 ton.
Life span is estimated at 40 - 50 years

Monomoy Wildlife Refuge headquarters is located in Chatham, off Morris Island Road.

Nature lovers of all ages will find interesting reading material along with
reams of verbal information from Naturalists like Rachel

The Monomoy Ferry departs from moorings at the base of a steep
sand dune adjacent to headquarters with hikers, adventurers and photographers aboard.

A fantastic beach side bird watching hike can be taken by solo explorers, starting down
the long stairs connecting headquarters to boat mooring area.
Dozens of different species can be seen in a leisurely 1 - 3 mile walk
I prefer early morning, but there are always hikers (and birds) to be seen

A Visit to the Refuge is always fascinating and enjoyable
